This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen
Title: This Is Not My Hat
Genre: Fiction
Author/Illustrator: Jon Klassen
Major awards: Caldecott Medal
Age group: PreK-3rd
Summary:
This is a fun book based off Jon Klassen's books on hats. This books is narrated by a small fish, who has a hat that doesn't belong to him. He stole the hat from a big fish. Throughout the book, the small fish swims along and boasts about the hat. Little does he know, the big fish knows he has his hat. The book has dark tones, but it's super fun because the illustrations contradict the small fish's assumptions. It teaches a valuable lesson while also being humorous. The book ends with the big fish getting his hat back.
Why would I use this book in the classroom:
As a future educator, I'd use this book in my classroom as an entertaining read. I think that the small fish would make the children laugh. However, I think the book's illustrations really speak for themselves. Since their is simple text, the illustrations tell the story. I'd use this book to teach students how to interpret the meaning of the illustrations. I think this will encourage the use of context clues and inferencing, which is a good reading skill.
Appropriate grade level:
I think an appropriate grade level for this book is PreK-3rd. The book is a simple read, and the illustrations of under the sea are very fun.
Ideas for unit of study to include the book in and how you might use the book in the classroom:
- Language Arts/Art: I would use this book to teach compare and contrast. I'd have my students compare the two fishes actions and thoughts from throughout the book.
