Summary:
This books describes the relationship between two siblings. The younger brother tells of his adventures with his sister, Clemmie, who is special needs. From the beginning of the book, the reader learns of the sister's disabilities. She can't walk or talk. However, that doesn't stop their fun. The brother goes on to describe why he loves his sister, in all of the sweetest, yet humorous/imaginative ways. Their bond and love can definitely be reflected off the pages of this book.
Why would I use this book in the classroom:
As a future educator, I'd use this book in my classroom to raise awareness on disabilities. The bond between these sibilings can teach students love and compassion.
Appropriate grade level:
I think an appropriate grade level for this book is PreK-2nd. I think the book was written very simply. The repetition of the phrase "just because," is sweet and simple. Students will be able to follow the fun adventure, while also using the illustrations to better understand Clemmie.
Ideas for unit of study to include the book in and how you might use the book in the classroom:
- Language Arts: I would use this book to lead an acitvity on character analysis. I would have students describe Clemmie's character.
