This book tells the story of Helen Keller. It is an inspiring biography told in a kid version by Helen Keller's character. Keller's childhood and adulthood are laid out in the book. Her disabilities are described, and the experiences she encountered are mentioned. The book has comic like graphics, which is neat for kids. At the end of the book, Keller leaves off with wise words for readers.

Why would I use this book in the classroom:

As a future educator, I'd use this book in my classroom to teach students about Helen Keller and her inspiring story. Keller was an extraordinary woman, who went against all odds, and set out to do the things she always wanted to do, despite her disabilities. Her biography is important, because it sheds light on the deaf and blind community.

Appropriate grade level:

I think an appropriate grade level for this book is K-3. Older students will be able to understand the long text in this book. The pictures and visuals display Keller's story well. The dialogue and comic like illustrations will be fun for kids.

Ideas for unit of study to include the book in and how you might use the book in the classroom:

  • Language Arts/Art: I would use this book to have students complete an activity where students write essays on heroes. I would also have the students practice braille.
