Summary:

This books tells the story of how it begins. It tells the beginning of butterflies, chickens, frogs, etc. all through illustrations. The book is set up by introducing what comes first, and then what comes next. There are cutouts in this book that work hand in hand with the illustrations. Towards the end of the book, all of the things mentioned, are in one painting. This book really displays a neat cycle and process through bright pictures.

Why would I use this book in the classroom:

As a future educator, I'd use this book in my classroom to teach students their transitional words. The book is written with simple sentences, "first... and then..." I think students will be fascinated by Seeger's illustration style and the way the cut-outs interact with the book. I think this book also answers a lot of questions that children have like, "What comes first?"

Appropriate grade level:

I think an appropriate grade level for this book is PreK-1st. The book is very simple and has simple, yet vibrant illustrations. Younger students will be able to follow along.

Ideas for unit of study to include the book in and how you might use the book in the classroom:

  • Language Arts/Science: I would use this book to have students learn about what comes first. I would have students draw a picture of something that comes first, and what comes next. I will allow students to use an example from the book.
