This book tells the story of Cesar Chavez. The reader is introduced to young Chavez and his home in Arizona. His life on the ranch was normal, but a drought drove his family and him to California. The financial burdens Chavez endured led to him dropping out of school, and becoming a farmer. The discrimination that Chavez experienced as a migrant farmer, and his fight are told in this book. In the end, Chavez left his mark on the world, and changed the lives of many farmworkers.
Why would I use this book in the classroom:
As a future educator, I'd use this book in my classroom to teach students about a historical figure, Cesar Chavez. He was an extraordinary individual that fought for the Farmers of America. His story is inspirational, and his protest he led, is part of American history. This book is motivating, and is perfect to share with students.
Appropriate grade level:
I think an appropriate grade level for this book is PreK-3rd. The book describes historical context in a way that is appealing to young readers. Students will enjoy the illustrations and colors used throughout the book, as they reflect Chavez's culture and world.
Ideas for unit of study to include the book in and how you might use the book in the classroom:
- Language Arts/Art: I would use this book to have students complete an activity where they write a letter to Cesar Chavez, asking him a question.
