Summary:

This book follows a unique fish named Swimmy. He is different from his school of fish. One day, his school is eaten by a tuna fish, and he find himself all alone in the sea. Swimmy feels many emotions. However, as he swims, he sees the beauty that the ocean has to offer. He finds happiness, and purpose when he meets a new school of fish. Together, they defeat a large fish.

Why would I use this book in the classroom:

As a future educator, I'd use this book in my classroom to teach students to keep on swimming. Sometimes we may feel all alone. This could be because we are different, or this could mean we are feeling sad. Our emotions can be pretty tricky. It is important that children know that they are not alone, and they have a purpose. They are each special in their own way.

Appropriate grade level:

I think an appropriate grade level for this book is PreK-2nd. I love the illustrations in this book, and the different sea creatures that are featured. There are so many colors that remind me of the sea. I think younger students would love the pictures. The book also has short sentences, which is good for early readers.

Ideas for unit of study to include the book in and how you might use the book in the classroom:

  • Language Arts/Art: I would use this book as a read aloud. My classroom will be a safe place. I think that teaching my class that we are a unit, can relate to the school of fish in this book. Like Swimmy, each student is unique. I'd have my students create their own fish. They can illustrate it as they please. I would then take their drawings, and create a fish outline using them.
