Summary:

This is a historical fiction book based on the impact of the Holocaust. It is told from the perspective of a young girl, Annamarie. She lives in Copenhagen along with her family, and experiences the terror raised by the Nazis. Her friendship with her Jewish friend leads her to protec her at all costs. Her bravery and courage are tested as she aids in the smuggling of other Jews to Sweden. Her family and her succeed in saving the lives of the Jews. Annamarie's story shares the true reality of what life was like during the Holocaust, and what it was like to live under Nazi control.

Why would I use this book in the classroom:

As a future educator, I'd use this book in my classroom to teach students about a historical time period, through the eyes of a child. This book is eye-opening. It discusses a tragedy, and the experiences that people underwent during it. Annamarie's story is just one of many. It deserves to be read.

Appropriate grade level:

I think an appropriate grade level for this book is 5th-7th. It has approriate language and context that an older age group will be able to comprehend. The Holocaust is a tragic event in history. It is a difficult topic to discuss, but it is important that we share that piece of history with students. The book sheds light on the event, while also paying homage to the Jewish, and those who helped them escape terror.

Ideas for unit of study to include the book in and how you might use the book in the classroom:

  • Language Arts/Social Studies: I would use this book to have students complete an activity where they compare the historical vs. fiction instances in this book. I would even take the students on a trip to the Holocaust museum.
