Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes
Title: Kitten's First Full Moon
Genre: Fiction
Author/Illustrator: Kevin Henkes
Major awards: Caldecott Medal
Age group: PreK-1st
Summary:
This book is about a kitten who is on a mission! The kitten sees her first full moon, and she thinks its a bowl of milk. All night she chases the moon, but no luck. She stumbles, gets wet, and never reaches the bowl of milk in the sky. In the end, she comes home to a bowl of milk set out for her. This story has black and white illustrations that set the scene of the night time, and the moonlight's shade of white milk. It's a cute story that shares the determination of a little, curious kitten.
Why would I use this book in the classroom:
As a future educator, I'd use this book in my classroom to share the determination of the kitten with my students. I think the kitten would really resonate with students. Plus, the book is super fun, and the illustrations show the kitten's expression and action as she wanders along the night.
Appropriate grade level:
I think an appropriate grade level for this book is PreK-1st. Students will probably relate to the kitten's fascination with the moon. The book has simple text, and the illustrations tell the story well, making it easy to follow.
Ideas for unit of study to include the book in and how you might use the book in the classroom:
- Language Arts/Art: I would use this book to have students complete an activity where they draw a picture from a scene in the book, and have them write about how the kitten felt.
