Title: I Love Saturdays and Domingos
Genre: Fiction/Multicultural
Author: Alma Flor Ada
Illustrator: Elivia Savadier
Major awards: N/A
Age group: PreK-2nd
Summary:
This books tells the story of a child with a multicultural background. I really enjoyed this book because of the entire context behind it. As a child, visits with my grandparents were my favorite. I too have a multicultural family. The character in this book loves the weekend, because she visits her grandparents. Her grandparents are of different decent. On Saturdays she visits her European decent family, and on Sundays (Doningos) she visits her Mexican decent family. As the book bounces back between her visits, the illustrations and text show the reader that although the grandparents are of different cultures, they are very similiar. In the end, the families unite for their granddaughter's birthday. The party shows the merge of the cultures, and the celebration of life.
Why would I use this book in the classroom:
As a future educator, I'd use this book in my classroom to discuss family heritage and culture. I think that book will leave students curious on their cultural backgrounds. I also think it will lead students to share their cultural experiences and customs. I really like how the book has spanish text. I think that the bilingualism used in the bookc reflects the story's multicultural background.
Appropriate grade level:
I think an appropriate grade level for this book is PreK-2nd. I think students will enjoy hearing the stories about the young girl's visits with her multicultural family. I also think the story line is predictable, since the girl is visting her grandparents every other page.
wIdeas for unit of study to include the book in and how you might use the book in the classroom:
- Language Arts: I would use this book to have students compare and contrast the characters in the book.
