Title: Because of Winn-Dixie
Genre: Fiction

Summary:
This book follows the friendship of a girl and her dog. Opal is new in her town, but she befriends a stray dog that she names Winn-Dixie. These two find each other during a time where they are both in need of a friend. A pet can definitely make a difference in someone's life. With Winn-Dixie by her side, Opal explores her true self, friendship, and tough life questions. Opal narrates this story, and her narration displays her story-telling voice. Opal's curiosity and growth in this book makes it a true coming of age novel that is perfect for a younger crowd. In the end of the book, Opal and Winn-Dixie are separated. However they are reunited and Opal finally finds a place in her community that she can call home, thanks to Winn-Dixie.
Why would I use this book in the classroom:
As a future educator, I'd use this book in my classroom because it's a coming of age novel. Opal's story is one that children can relate too, and can learn from her. Opal is a new person in her town, and we all have experience with being new to things. Winn-Dixie opens the door to an exciting, new world for Opal. This is a refreshing story that is heartwarming, and shares a fun adventure students will enjoy.
Appropriate grade level:
I think an appropriate grade level for this book is 4th-7th. Opal's character is at a young age, where she faces issues and lessons that many children in this age group may be able to relate too. The vocabulary and chapters are an appropriate level for students in these grades.
Ideas for unit of study to include the book in and how you might use the book in the classroom:
- Language Art: I would use this book to teach students about a book's plot and character analysis. There are many characters in this book, so I think that it's a great book to discuss the different ones presented.
