Apples and Robins by Lucie Felix
Title: Apples and Robins
Genre: Fiction
Author/Illustrator: Lucie Felix
Major awards: N/A
Age group: Kinder-3rd
Summary:
This book is all about shapes! It takes the reader through the seasons, with a story about apples and robins. The girl in this book has an apple tree, where the robins live. The story line shows the apples and robins from summer to spring. The girl maintains the apples and cares for the robins. Her story is told using cut-outs! The book is simply written, and uses the cut-outs to describe the manipulation of shapes in everyday life. In the end, the girl describes spring. In spring, there is new life, there are new robins. The cycle continues. The book is a blend of abstract and realism.
Why would I use this book in the classroom:
As a future educator, I'd use this book in my classroom to teach students about shapes and seasons. The book is interactive and shows the use of shapes, and the effects of the seasons. The story line goes perfectly with this time. It adds fun.
Appropriate grade level:
I think an appropriate grade level for this book is Kinder-3rd. The book is simply written, but I can see how it would be difficult to follow for younger students. However, it can be enjoyable for them too because of the cut-outs. This age group also includes students who are becoming or are familiar with their shapes.
Ideas for unit of study to include the book in and how you might use the book in the classroom:
- Language Arts: I would use this book to teach students summarization. Since this book goes from summer to spring, I'd use it to teach students the order of a story line.
