Summary:
This book is a twist on the classic tale of Cinderella. It is a Mexican Cinderella story. The book tells of Adelita, and her life as an orphan. Adelita lives with her stepmother and stepsisters, and is treated as a housemaid. One day she attends a fiesta and meets her childhood friend, Javier. They fall in love, but they are separated. Javier finds Adelita and her distinct clothing piece, and they get married. They live happily ever after.
Why would I use this book in the classroom:
As a future educator, I'd use this book in my classroom to teach students culture appreciation. The book has many Spanish references and phrases, while also including translations. I love the Mexican culture that this book illustrates, while using a classic story line. The neat thing about this story is that is leans more towards regular life, rather than a fairy tale. Although it misses this magical elements, I think students will still enjoy the tale.
Appropriate grade level:
I think an appropriate grade level for this book is PreK-3rd, because it is similar to a fairy tale. Children will enjoy the tale and the colorful illustrations.
Ideas for unit of study to include the book in and how you might use the book in the classroom:
- Language Arts/Art: I would read both the classic Cinderella tale and Adelita to students. I would then have them compare and contrast the two books.
